The Minister of Agriculture and Water and the Mayor of Torre Pacheco III presents the Melon Technical Conference to be held in the Performing Arts Center township on May 28

The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, today with the mayor of Torre Pacheco, Daniel García Madrid, Melon III Technical Conference to be held in the Performing Arts Center of the town on Friday, May 28, and they are a classic for a deeper knowledge of this crop.

The melon-growing area in the region of Murcia occupies about 7,000 hectares spread over the region of Cartagena and surrounding districts as Avileses, Bath & Pauper, Corvera, Gea and Truyols, Lobosillo, Los Martínez del Puerto, Valladolises and Sucina.

The geographical features of each of these areas producing results in different melon varieties differ in their sweetness, juiciness, flavor, weight and size.

The main variety grown is the Piel de Sapo melon, whose area accounts for 46 percent of regional total, followed by Galia, Charentais, cantaloupe and Yellow.

The professionalism of farmers in this area have proven producer responsibility for the superb quality of this product that comes mainly to markets in England, Germany and France.

Regional production of melon is 210,000 tons, representing 20 percent of domestic production, exceeded only by Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia.

Quality mark

The work done in recent years farmers in the Campo de Cartagena is deserving of the distinctive quality for which we gamble.
