The City Council participates with the Faculty of Sports Sciences in a physical exercise program to combat frailty in the elderly (30/09/2019)

The program combines physical exercise with nutritional supplementation and is specially designed to reverse fragility in people over 70 years.

Participants will receive an initial medical and physical assessment that will allow establishing the initial exercises and levels of intensity and volume of training for each person.

The Department of Sports of the City of Torre Pacheco and the Faculty of Sports Sciences of the University of Murcia, presented the Heal Project, on September 27 at the City Hall, before a group of interested people.

Oscar Montoya, Councilor for Sports and Javier Courel, Professor of the Faculty of Sports Sciences of the University of Murcia, and Project Coordinator, announced the Heal Program.

There is increasing evidence of the multiple benefits that physical activity has on health, regardless of how old you are or when you start.

Strengthening the body not only helps prevent a multitude of diseases, but also allows people to be more autonomous and independent, which results in greater happiness and quality of life.

In addition, it represents a considerable saving in expenses associated with older people with fragility and comorbidity.

Knowing these benefits, the City of Torre Pacheco will participate with the Faculty of Sports Sciences of the University of Murcia in the HEAL project, a program of physical exercise and nutritional supplementation specially designed to reverse fragility and promote physical activity among its residents .

The program includes an initial medical and physical assessment that allows establishing the initial exercises and levels of intensity and volume of training for each person.

This initiative has the active participation of a multidisciplinary group of professionals, which includes researchers, trainers, doctors, physiotherapists and health professionals.

Participants will follow a daily and targeted training program at local municipal facilities.

One-hour sessions in small groups include strength, coordination and agility exercises.

The results obtained confirm that, in just one month, the participants manage to improve their strength and functional capacity, are able to walk longer distances, suffer fewer falls, feel safer and are happier.

These benefits are shared by family members, caregivers and health personnel, who have improved their quality of life and working conditions.

The project is coordinated by Dr. Jesús García Pallarés and Dr. Javier Courel Ibáñez, of the Human Performance & Sports Science research group of the Faculty of Sports Sciences of the University of Murcia.

It also has the support of the Virgen de la Caridad Medical Center and has been funded by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia through the call for grants to projects for the development of scientific and technical research by competitive groups, included in the Program Regional Research Promotion (Action Plan 2019) of the Seneca Foundation, Agency of Science and Technology of the Region of Murcia.

The program is already established in different centers and residences in the Region of Murcia, including the San Antonio de Torre Pacheco Social Center.

Applications for joining the program can be sent to the email address courel@um.es or by calling 868888811.
