The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, today with the mayor of Torre Pacheco, Daniel García Madrid, Melon III Technical Conference to be held in the Performing Arts Center of the town on Friday, May 28, and that according to Cerda, "is a classic" to "deepen" the knowledge of this crop.

The melon-growing area in the region of Murcia occupies about 7,000 hectares spread over the region of Cartagena and surrounding districts as Avileses, Bath & Pauper, Corvera, Gea and Truyols, Lobosillo, Los Martínez del Puerto, Valladolises and Sucina.

The main variety grown is the Piel de Sapo melon, whose area accounts for 46 percent of regional total, followed by Gaul, Charentais, cantaloupe and Yellow.

Regional production of melon is 210,000 tons, representing 20 percent of domestic production, exceeded only by Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia.
Quality mark
