This morning the Laboratory of Archaeological and Paleoanthropological Investigations of the Sima de las Palomas del Cabezo Gordo, located in the premises of the Integral Security Center (CIS) of Torre Pacheco, was inaugurated.
The Mayor of Torre Pacheco, Antonio León, accompanied by the councilman of Culture, Raúl Lledó, the director of the excavations of the Cueva Negra and Sima de las Palomas deposits, Dr. Michael Walker, as well as members of the Municipal Corporation and the Murcia Association for the study of Paleoanthropology and the Quaternary (MUPANTQUAT), have visited the facilities of the Archaeological and Paleanthropological Research Laboratory.
Provisional place to investigate, save and classify the material found in the Sima de las Palomas, waiting to be located in the Paleontological Regional Museum and the Human Evolution, next to the Cabezo Gordo.
In the course of the event the archaeologists have shown some of the most representative pieces found during the excavations in the Sima de las Palomas and that are currently guarded in a safe inside it.
Due to the value of the pieces and the security measures that they require, they have opted for their location in the dependencies of the CIS, since it is the seat of the Local Police of the municipality.
For their part, archaeologists Mariano López and María Haber, co-directors of the excavations at the Sima de las Palomas deposit, have taken stock of the work carried out so far, which will continue from July 20 to August 10 of this year. .
The archaeological campaigns coordinated by the Murcia Association for the study of Paleoanthropology and the Quaternary, have the collaboration of the City Council of Torre Pacheco through the Department of Culture.
The next campaign aims to continue with the excavation of the last layer and to see how deep the sediment of the Sima de las Palomas continues to be fertile.
A campaign in which surprising results are expected, as every year.
Sima de las Palomas is the site of the most outstanding Neanderthal man in the Spanish Mediterranean arch.
In its more than twenty years of excavations, it has brought to light the presence of at least ten individuals.
Three of the skeletons belong to two adults and a young man with an age of 50,000 years, they were found almost complete and in anatomical connection, an exceptional fact in the world panorama.
The Mayor of Torre Pacheco, thanked the work carried out around the excavations in the Sima de las Palomas, for 27 years, as well as the great work of the co-directors, Mariano López, and María Haber, highlighting especially the work of Michael Walker , who also holds the distinction of Adoptive Son of the Villa de Torre Pacheco.
