The Deputy Speaker of the Socialist Parliamentary Group Isabel Casalduero has proposed in the Plenary Assembly that a working group be set up in which representatives of local, regional and national administration will actively participate, with the aim of unblocking the situation in which finds the construction of the Regional Museum of Paleontology and Human Evolution (MUPEH), in Torre Pacheco.
This motion has been approved unanimously by the Chamber.
This debate was attended by a representation of the Government Team of the City Council of Torre Pacheco, headed by the mayor, Antonio León, and Councilmen Carlos López and Verónica Martínez.
Casalduero explained during his speech all the evolution of the project, which began in December 2006, when the regional government approved the direct granting of a subsidy to the City Council of Torre Pacheco, for the construction and development of the Regional Museum of Paleontology and Human Evolution and its commissioning before December 31, 2009.
In 2010 the first stone was placed and in 2013 the works were paralyzed "due to multiple excuses made by the then municipal government team".
Today, "we find an unfinished building, whose management the Community does not want to take over as committed, with more than 4 million euros invested and for which completion would have to invest another 3.5 million euros of public money ".
The deputy spokesperson explained that "if there is no firm commitment on the part of the Autonomous Community, in terms of assuming the management and maintenance of the museum, it is more profitable for the City to return the subsidy, than to spend more money on an infrastructure whose management can not assume the City Council neither by capacity nor by competition ".
The maintenance costs of the museum can go, perfectly, the million euros a year, amount that the City Council of Torre Pacheco can not assume.
For Isabel Casalduero, "investing that money in an infrastructure that can not be opened is squandering public money".
He explained that the choice of Torre Pacheco for the location of this museum is not accidental.
The excavations of the paleontological site of the Sima de las Palomas del Cabezo Gordo discovered the presence of the most complete Neanderthal skeleton in all the European Mediterranean littoral and other remains of great archaeological relevance.
The purpose of this project was to conserve, investigate and disseminate the richness and diversity of the Murcian paleontological heritage through the collections of fossils from the deposits discovered in the Region.
"The Community must assume its responsibility for the museum, which involves the preparation of a report on a management plan for it, so that once its viability has been studied, the City will resume construction work."
Therefore, he claimed the maximum involvement of all administrations.
"We trust that they will carry out this feasibility plan and will be able to sit down and put in common all the necessary alternatives to make the MUPEH a reference at the international level, which will benefit the municipality of Torre Pacheco and our Region and, in no case , suppose a slab for the welfare and progress of the citizens of this municipality.
