The Department of Social Services and Equality of the City of Torre Pacheco in collaboration with Afal Cartagena and District, has organized Memory Workshops in Balsicas, Pacheco Tower, San Cayetano, Dolores de Pacheco and El Jimenado, all of them with great success of participation.
Many of the memory problems referred by the elderly are not related to the disease but to the lack of stimulation, attention and training, or affective and emotional problems;
For this reason it is necessary to offer cognitive training programs that help to conserve the capacities as long as possible in order to preserve autonomy, teaching concrete strategies that allow solving the most common daily forgetfulness in the elderly.
With the completion of these workshops, it is intended that participants know the basic functioning of memory, change attitudes and negative stereotypes about the irreversibility of alterations or memory deficits, and train them in specific strategies and techniques that can be transferred to the daily life, improve the mood and self-esteem of the participants and facilitate communication among its members.
The workshop given by the Association's neuropsychologist, Sandra Castaño Llorente, has been developed in 12 sessions, where older people have carried out activities related to memory, attention, language and calculation, as well as providing them with different strategies that older people can put into practice in their daily lives to exercise the brain.
Closing ceremonies and diplomas have been held in El Jimenado, San Cayetano, Balsicas, Torre Pacheco and Dolores de Pacheco, with a total of 100 participants.
