The mayor of Torre Pacheco, Antonio León, accompanied by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Alberto Galindo, and the Councilor for Culture and Tourism, Raúl Lledó, as well as members of the Municipal Corporation, municipal technicians, and the director of the PEGIRO company, Cecilio Almagro and the company's architect, Caridad Martínez, made a visit to supervise the rehabilitation works that are being carried out at the Molino del Tío Farroco.
Since last summer, the City Council of Torre Pacheco is carrying out the conservation works of the flour mill of "Uncle Facorro" located in the center of the town.
A conservation and restoration project aimed at preserving existing machinery through the repair of damaged parts of it and the reconstruction of those that have disappeared or are unusable, all in order to put into operation this industrial heritage that is Well of Cultural Interest.
Antonio León highlighted the important cultural legacy that the Campo de Cartagena has, with more than 200 windmills, of which 15 are in the municipality of Torre Pacheco.
In addition, he pointed out that some of these mills are municipally owned, as is the case of the mill of "El Tío Facorro", acquired by the town hall 30 years ago, but which stopped working due to numerous deficiencies.
A highly demanded work that has a subsidy from the General Directorate of Cultural Assets of the Autonomous Community, León added.
The intervention has consisted of recovering the guideline of support of this stone that serves as support to the main axis.
To this end, the wooden supports have been substituted for said stone, called fuéllega, since it has lost its stable support due to rot.
Also, the 13 meter long guide stick has been completely replaced, which is the characteristic element of windmills intended to turn the spire and position the sails facing the wind.
During the intervention and analyzed the original elements of the mill, it has been proven that it has been attacked by xylophages of all kinds: termites, woodworms and wood fungi that are being treated progressively, and for a period of 2 years.
The first reference of this historical monument dates from 1838. The mill of "El Tío Facorro", with an age of 182 years, has a circular floor plan, while its conical and covered body rise a total of 11 meters from the base.
The grinding windmills have the tower, machinery, spire, sticks, sails and all the space surrounding the mill necessary for it to work.
Currently, the works are in the phase of paints and wood treatments, concluding in the coming weeks.
