More than 600 people participate in the Open Day at the Sima de las Palomas del Cabezo Gordo in Torre Pacheco, an act that complements the event that is held every summer at the end of the excavation campaign.
The Minister of Tourism, Youth and Sports, Cristina Sánchez, participated today in the visit to the Sima de las Palomas and the Water Cave, where she highlighted the importance of the protection of our paleontological sites as a fundamental part of our heritage cultural, which attracts not only the citizens of the Region but also from neighboring communities. ”
He also said that "cultural tourism is closely associated with religious, gastronomic, or historical and archaeological tourism, as we are seeing here today."
Therefore, said the counselor, "we are promoting this type of tourism, which contributes to the diversification of the offer, to the positioning of the image and identity of a destination."
The Cabezo Gordo is a Protected Landscape of great biotic, landscape, paleontological and cultural interest.
Inside is the Sima de las Palomas, the second most important paleontological site in Spain after Atapuerca, in Burgos.
