The Torre-Pacheco City Council together with the Association for the Environment and Animal Protection Dejando Huella TP is addressing the problem of abandonment and animal welfare in the municipality.
Animal protection continues to be a necessary activity, since despite the awareness campaigns and the increasing sensitivity of our society to these types of events, the scourge of animal abuse and neglect is still very present. Currently, actions are being carried out for the collection, maintenance and shelter of abandoned animals, as well as the control of the feline colonies of the municipality, opting to apply the CER method (Capture, Sterilize and Return) in what refers to feline colonies and also zero sacrifice with respect to the collection of abandoned and / or stray dogs and cats. Feral cats and feline colonies, in general, enjoy legal protection and municipalities must comply with the specifications of current regulations regarding the welfare and protection of these animals.
That is why, according to José Vera, Councilor for Animal Welfare, the placement of the indicator posters in the protected feline colonies has begun, so that within a society awareness campaign that is preparing, the adequate signage of these neighborhoods serve the neighbors of Torre Pacheco to respect and collaborate in their maintenance. The feline colonies are cared for by accredited volunteers who are part of the Association Leaving Huella TP.
These volunteers maintain an action protocol and an exhaustive registry of the cats that belong to each of the colonies, whether they have been sterilized and whether or not they are likely to be adopted.
All this together with other follow-up, care and feeding actions, in addition to visits to the veterinarian to treat some of these animals that may be more vulnerable (injured, pregnant and / or newborn babies).
) or find themselves in a worse condition due to illness, hit-and-run injuries, poisonings.During 2020, even with the limitations arising from the pandemic, more than 100 street cats have been rescued, with their corresponding deworming , they have castrated, microchipped and vaccinated over 40 cats and colonies have been fed throughout the municipality.
In this next year 2021, an agreement will be signed with Dejando Huella TP to continue and expand the work they have been doing, in addition, protected feline colonies will continue to be identified.
