They set up a pilot system in a desalination bioelectrogenesis Torre Pacheco (15/07/2016)

Water CEO, Andres Martinez, visited today the installation of a pilot system bioelectrogenesis (or microbial electrogenesis) in a desalination an estate of Torre Pacheco, which allows purify water and remove nitrates.

The visit also featured Esamur manager, Jesus Artero, the director of the CENTA Foundation, Juan José Salas, Secretary of COAG, Francisco Gil, researchers at the University of Alcala de Henares and representatives of farmers in the area.

The bioelectrogenesis is used to remove nitrates from water and is based on the ability of a type of bacteria (Geobacter) to transfer electrons.

By providing a tiny electric current, electrons transferred bacteria to nitrates and get transformed into nitrogen gas.

The power consumption of this installation is minimal, just add a small amount of organic matter, much less than in a biological denitrification reaction as those made in sewage treatment plants, and does not produce sludge.

This technology has been successfully tested in the laboratory and will now start on a larger pilot plant.

The CEO Water, Andres Martinez, recalled that "from Regional Government is working intensively on finding solutions to ensure that, from the outset, the effluent can reach the Mar Menor not contain inorganic nutrients. This action is a as most of those are being launched for the removal of nitrates in high salinity waters. "

Bioelectrogenesis plant will be controlled by personnel of the treatment plant Los Alcázares and will do daily monitoring of performance and results to know its answer.

After obtaining the results, you give the same information to irrigators and farmers.

The plant has been placed in a container with the idea that it is mobile and can be use in other facilities on a trial basis and irrigators, once aware of the results, check that may install this method either fixedly through civil, or work movably, to take any of their farms with desalination.

Andres Martinez explained that they have already launched three pioneering systems in removing nitrates in high salinity waters.

One is the biolectrogénesis system, consisting in the filtration of effluents through conductors beds where a biofilm reducing molecules generating nitrate nitrogen molecular develops.

Another system, already under operation, is the biofilter;

and finally it is to install a system to reduce nitrates by electrical or electrodesnitrificación catalysis processes.

Likewise, the CEO Water said "is already installed on this same Torre Pacheco desalination plant with biofiltration system, which is to remove nitrates from water transforming nitrogen".

This system was installed as a pilot in the EDAR of Los Alcázares, with a yield already reaches 97 percent in eliminating nitrates.
