A jaw fragment from a new Neanderthal is found in the 2017 Excavation Campaign at the Sima de las Palomas (10/08/2017)

Among the findings of the XXVIII Field School of Paleoanthropology and Prehistory of the Quaternary, in Sima de las Palomas highlights a fragment of a jaw of a small child more than 65,000 years ago.

During the last campaign, archaeologists and volunteers have found new remains, including a fragment of a child's jaw, Michael J. Walker, who was accompanied by the director of the excavations, said today. Mayor of Torre-Pacheco, Antonio León and by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Javier Celdrán.

With this new edition, the number of individuals in this site of Torre Pacheco, one of the most important in Europe, increases until eleven or twelve and the antiquity of the layers studied is already in the 130,000 years.

In this campaign that began on July 21 and ends on August 11, the excavation has advanced to a respectable depth and this year has advanced two meters below the articulated skeletons that have already been found.

The great find that stars in this campaign is the presence of the fragment of a jaw infantile or of small boy of the Man of Neanderthal in the gap of between 65,000 and 90,000 years ago.

On this occasion the layer on which has been worked is rich in animal remains, from the abundant turtle and the rabbit to horses, deer and even a wolf.

Some recovered remains show no signs of combustion, but other fragments are charred, mostly small and crushed, indicating the importance of the place for roasting meat.

Numerous tools of flint, marble and quartz have also been found, such as musteriens' tips and studs.
