The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment has restored the size of the Virgin of the Rosary, patroness of Torre Pacheco, which has today been delivered by the Secretary General of the Ministry, Pilar Valero, the pastor of the church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the locality Murcia in the headquarters of the Center of Restoration of the Region.
Through this act, said Valero, "we return the image of the Virgin of the Rosary to the neighbors of Torre Pacheco in the best possible conditions so that they can celebrate with her the parties in which the municipality is already immersed, who will live this Saturday its big day with the procession of its patrona ".
It is a carved polychrome and carved wood sculpture (165 x 65 x 65) made at the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century by the sculptor José Sánchez Lozano that has been studied in depth and restored by the technicians of the regional center.
The head of the Ministry recalled "the interest of the regional government in the recovery and conservation of our heritage," as well as "the great work that is done in the restoration of works of art, and especially those that make up our heritage ecclesiastical: images that are part of the history and traditions of our municipalities and those that process every Holy Week throughout the Region, "he added.
Treatment
In a first study were detected in the stature of Our Lady of the Rosary deteriorations like friction, blows and small punctual fissures, besides a layer of generalized dirt that veiled and mataba the original polychrome stratum, being verified that both the image of the Virgin and the of the Child had poor conservation status.
After being examined with ultraviolet light, it was also detected that different areas of the mantle and robe had been rebuilt in an earlier intervention and different localized repaints were revealed, both in the hands of the Virgin and in the Child's carnation.
The restoration has focused on localized concrete damage.
In the first place, a physical-chemical cleaning of all the zones of carnation was carried out, removing the dirt and punctual repaints, as well as a cleaning of the most superficial dirt in the mantle and tunic of the Virgin.
The faults of the preparation layer were reconstructed and a differentiated chromatic reintegration was carried out.
Finally, we proceeded to protect the images with a final varnish and have rebuilt the eyelashes both in the size of the Virgin and the Child.
Valero also stressed "the interesting study carried out by the Ministry to verify the correct anchoring of the Virgin's size to the throne, since in the Restoration Center, a national reference center thanks to its means and the work of its professionals , an endoscopic analysis was done from the base to confirm its anchorage system, as well as the situation and amplitude of the internal box that the sculpture possesses.
Size
The patroness of Torre Pacheco responds to one of the most outstanding Marian invocations in Spain, the Rosary, closely linked with the Order of Dominicans.
The order itself, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, led to the founding of numerous cofradias under the patronage of the Rosary, and since then has been a popular veneration in all Catholic countries.
The size of Sánchez Lozano now restored by Culture follows the iconography of the Virgin of the Rosary or Aurora, although in this case dressed in blue tones in both the robe and the robe, while covered by a pink lace.
It is simple in its configuration, despite the sum of elements around the two main figures.
The Virgin and Child have faces and attitudes that approximate the archetypes marked from the tradition of Salzillo, but without losing beauty and originality.
Carnations, polychromes, showy quilts forming floral bouquets and borders of palmettes on the edges of robe and mantle make up a set where the remarkable works of carving of the figures stand out.
