The School of Agronomists of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena presented Friday the new vintage of its Tomás Ferro wine, made at the Agri-Food Experimental Station of the same name, located on La Palma, with the Merseguera grape variety, traditional from the Cartagena countryside .
The wines obtained are the result of traditional cultivation and the use of the most modern production and processing technologies, which combine water savings and beneficial effects on health.
The production of white wine is part of the "Uva Merseguera Project", whose main objective is the recovery of this variety, of which only 25 hectares are currently planted in the field of Cartagena, compared to the 300 hectares that were fifteen years as a result of the arrival of irrigated crops.
This year, Antonio León Garre, mayor of Torre-Pacheco, has been named sponsor of the year, who has been accompanied by members of the Municipal Corporation.
The event was held in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Cartagena and counted with the presence of the Mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, the rector of the UPCT, Alejandro Díaz, among other authorities.
The benefit of the sale of the wine will be donated to an NGO.
The Agroalimentary Experimental Station is a research center dependent on the School of Agricultural Engineering.
The R & D Groups of the "Food Engineering and Agricultural Equipment" departments, "Agracia Science and Technology" and "Vegetal Production" develop their research activities related to agri-food technology.
