Hundreds of people gathered yesterday at the Cabezo Gordo to celebrate the Feast of the Cross in the Cabezo Gordo, in which the episcopal vicar of the Campo de Cartagena - Mar Menor, Jose Leon and the parochial vicar of Torre-Pacheco Antonio Martinez blessed the new cross and the new altar installed in the area after the theft of the cross above last year.
After the Mass and the blessing, all attendees enjoyed a lunch of brotherhood in the magnificent parajde of Cabezo Gordo.
For generations, people in the districts surrounding the Cabezo pachequeras have "branching" Cross.
The origin of this religious festival appears to have originated in the discovery by St. Helena of the cross where Christ died.
The story tells how the Emperor Constantine the Great in the sixth year of his reign, he faces against the barbarians on the banks of the Danube, in a battle whose victory is thought impossible because of the magnitude of the enemy.
One night, Constantine has a vision in the sky which appeared to him the Cross of Christ shining above it and a few words, "In hoc signo Vincis" (In this sign conquer).
The emperor had built a cross and put it in front of his army, which then easily defeated the enemy crowd.
Back in the city, learned the meaning of the Cross, Constantine was baptized in the Christian religion and ordered the building of churches.
Then he sent his mother, St. Helena, to Jerusalem in search of the true Cross of Christ.
This festival was originally celebrated on May 3, but moved to commemorate the day of the finding of the Cross.
But though his religious feast in the Church is celebrated on September 14, has been marked in the town on May 3.
In South America it is still celebrated on May 3.
