Yesterday the Mayor of Torre Pacheco, Daniel García Madrid, together with the territorial director of Vega Baja Cajamar in Murcia Mar Menor, Francisca Saura and the head of the Plant Protection Service of the Autonomous Community, Francisco González, inaugurated the technical conference " integrated control of red palm weevil "to better understand the problem of weevil and programs currently being implemented in the control of this pest.
This conference is organized theoretical and practical by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water of Murcia, the City of Torre-Pacheco and Cajamar Caja Rural
Throughout the evening, several speakers were talking about the situation of the weevil and its control in the region or using agestes for biological control.
In addition, two technicians municipal parks and gardens of San Javier and Abanilla explained cases of their respective municipalities.
The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, has spread in recent years worryingly for all Mediterranean countries attacking large numbers of several species of palms, Phoenix canariensis being the most affected.
In Spain, where it was first detected in 1993 in the Costa Tropical, the pest has rapidly developed its populations throughout southern, eastern and northeastern peninsular, still present today in all Mediterranean regions and even the Canary Islands.
The control of this devastating pest is priority for many government agencies and private companies specializing in gardening and urban trees.
