The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, and the Mayor of Torre Pacheco, Daniel García Madrid, today presided over the inauguration of new president of the newly created Control Board of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), Melon de Torre Pacheco, Juan Peñalver.
During the ceremony, the head of the regional Agriculture said that "new quality (PGI) Melon de Torre Pacheco Murcia will be called and the Campo de Cartagena to all palates of Europe," and encouraged the new Control Board to "work for the product to be recognized."
The distinctive IGP, managed by the Melon de Torre Pacheco, gives greater added value and profitability by product and guarantee the quality parameters within the national and international markets, and greater projection beyond our borders.
Currently, the four varieties of this melon are grown under this name in the Campo de Cartagena, the Skin of frog, Gaul, and Cantaloupe Melon Yellow, intended in a 66 percent market international, particularly England, Germany, Holland and France.
31 percent remains in the domestic market, and the remaining 3 percent is exported to third countries outside the European Union
Of the 5,657 hectares devoted to melons throughout the Community, 54 per cent, 3,058 hectares, corresponding to the area recognized the IGP Melon de Torre Pacheco.
In terms of regional production of melon, is situated around 223,000 tons, representing 21 percent of total domestic production, exceeded only by Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia.
The region above the two communities in yields per hectare, the order of 38,000 kg / ha in rainfed and 58,000 kg / ha under irrigation, of which 75 percent are covered under the IGP of Melon de Torre Pacheco.
This melon is known for its greater weight and size, as well as its sweetness, juiciness and flavor, achieved through a combination of fresh water from the Tajo-Segura, with the use of groundwater with high salt content, coupled with growing and handling practices that traditionally have been farmers in the area.
