The Coordinator of Agricultural and Livestock Organizations in Torre Pacheco held today a seminar on the state of the potato sector, just as he ended the worst season of the Spanish potato ever recorded, because the monopolistic attitude of some supermarkets.
Throughout this year the successive campaigns of potatoes have been the worst in living memory, with prices ruinous to farmers and prohibitive for consumers, who have come to pay for a kilo of potatoes to 16 times its value at source.
The first area affected by this serious crisis was the Region of Murcia, where early potatoes are grown and extratempranos, which was followed by Andalusia and other Spanish regions, reaching, in any case not to cover production costs.
